On this day in History 17th April 1909
Mr Oscar Schofield of Oakenrod won open golf championship of Italy on the links of Asqua Santa on the Roman Campagna.
Oscar Schofield was my great uncle, and lived (to be 97) into the 1970s. He was obviously in good golf form in the first decade of the 20th century, for he also won the Captain's Prize at the newly formed Whittaker Golf Club in 1908. The family story is that he was staying in Italy in April 1909 and someone suggested that he might like to play in a nearby tournament - only this note has told me the date and course!
