It was in May 1841 that the Boat Inn at Belfield opened.
The boat had formerly carried passengers on the branch canal between Bluepits Railway Station and Heywood.
The redundant barge was balaced on an even keel on dry land then transformed into a wayside inn.
At first the deck was left open to enable customers to enjoy open air drinks on fine summer days
but with English summers being more damp than sunny the sides were eventually bricked up and roofed over. A nautical air was preserved with portholes set in the sloping sides!
