On this day 10th July 1957

Mr Fred Dunkerley, managing Director of the Standard Mill, Rochdale, won the King’s Cup air race at Coventry in his Miles Sparrow jet plane.  Mr Dunkerley completed the course in an average speed of 228 m.p.h.  He had been competing for the cup for eight successive years.
