On this day 18th July 1857

Death of Mr William Littlewood of Townhead Academy.  Many of the principal inhabitants received their early education under his tuition, including our distinguished townsman the Right Hon. John Bright, M.P.  In consequence of the high esteem in which he was held, there was a large public funeral.
